John 'Gassy Jack' Deighton

John 'Gassy Jack' Deighton was a steamer captain and a bar owner. Born in Hull (England), he arrived in Canada after working on US ships which were in demand during the California Gold Rush. Gold was what brought Deighton to Canada. He did not find it. He got ill and for this reason he had to find other meaning to support himself. He ran a bar in New Westminster called the Globe Saloon, between 1862 and 1867. After an old shipmate who was entrusted by Deighton of taking care of the saloon while he was away ruined the Globe Saloon, John moved south of Burrard Inlet where he opened up a new saloon with the same name "Globe Saloon". Sailors and workers of the nearby sawmill were his main patrons. Deighton was known as Gassy Jack because of his talkative nature and his penchant for storytelling. The name stuck and the area around his bar is now known as Gastown.
