Ahmed bin Hamad al-Khalili

Gran Mufti (literally "the great of expounders" is the highest official of religious law in a Sunni or Ibadi Muslim country) of Oman. Born in Zanzibar when it was still under Omani rule, he memorized the Quran at the age of 9 graduating at the local Quranic school. He moved from Zanzibar to Oman, along with his father and many Omanis, after the Zanzibar revolution. In Bahla, Oman, he started to teach at the local mosque. The next step in his career saw al-Khalili teaching at the Al Khor Mosque in Muscat until 1971. In 1971 he was appointed judge at the Court of Appeal and right after he was selected to cover the role Director of the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. The last and most important advancement arrived in 1975 when he was appointed Gran Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman. He is a regular presence on the TV where he answers the public's questions about Islam.
